Maine's Free Fishing Weekend is THIS weekend. According to our friends at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife:

During this special weekend, any person, including non-residents, may fish for free without a license on Maine’s waterways (except those who have had their license suspended or revoked). All other rules and regulations, including bag and possession limits, apply.

Outside of this weekend, if you are 16 or older, you ARE required to have a fishing license. The law in Maine states:

A person is required to keep his/her fishing license with him/her at all times while fishing or transporting fish and must exhibit their license for inspection by any warden, department employee, guide or landowner upon request. An electronic license or permit can now be displayed in lieu of a physical paper license or permit. Possession of fishing tackle in the fields or forest or on the waters or ice of this State without a fishing license is prima facie evidence of fishing in violation of the law
