Subscribe to Q97.9 on

With the release of the new trailer for Stephen King’s “It” today, we thought we should look back at some terrifying films set right here in Vacationland.

We have a pretty cool advantage here in Maine, because one of the world’s most iconic horror writers calls our state home. Stephen King was born in Maine in the ’40s, and he’s set some of his most iconic stories here since he started writing in the ’60s.

Here are some other scary films set right here in Maine – have you seen them?

‘The Mist’

Another Stephen King story turned into a horror flick, “The Mist” is set somewhere near Bridgton, and ends with surviving characters driving along I-295 to Portland.

Lake Placid

When a mysterious creature violently kills a man in a Maine lake, Jack Wells (Bill Pullman), the local game warden, looks into the bizarre case, along with Sheriff Hank Keough (Brendan Gleeson) and visiting paleontologist Kelly Scott (Bridget Fonda).

Pet Sematary

Behind a young family’s home in Maine is a terrible secret that holds the power of life after death. Another story from Stephen King, this one will keep you up at night.

Night of Dark Shadows

A painter and his wife move into a home in Collinsport, Maine, and find themselves plagued by ghosts and spirits of his ancestors that used to be witches.

How could any list of scary movies set in Maine not include one of Stephen King’s most iconic stories? Carrie is the story of a¬†shy girl, outcasted by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.
