I have a lot of fond childhood memories, but some of the best are from the summers that my family spent at one of the most beautiful camping areas in Maine.

In the 70's and 80's, my whole family including my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and even family friends, all camped together along the ocean in Maine and made some of the best memories.

That's a picture of me on the left, my brother Joel in the middle, and our childhood friend Joanna at Winslow Memorial Park in Freeport back in the mid 1970's. Behind us is where the Harraseeket River meets the waters of Casco Bay.

Winslow Park sits on a peninsula that was given to the Town of Freeport as a gift from Adelaide Winslow Harb in 1953 in memory of her mother,  Delia B. Powers Winslow. Her intent was that it be used as a public park for recreational purposes.

For over 60 years, families like mine have enjoyed the park as a place to camp, picnic, swim and hike along the shore.

I have so many memories of summer camping here. We spent about a decade at Winslow park every summer. If you ever visit, we were always in the field in the upper corner of the campground along the ocean with our family and the many other families we became close friends with meeting there.

When you look out over the water in the camping area you would see a small island with a large tree. We always called it Hawaii as kids, but it's real name is Crab Island. You can see it to the right of the photo of the moon over the water I took when I visited with my son back when he was just nine-months-old.

As kids we would go dig for clams when the tide was out, fish off the docks at the Harraseeket Marina for crabs and I even learned how to play cribbage when I was a kid there. Two out of three of those things you can't anymore. You can still play cribbage all you want though.

If you have never visited Winslow Park, you need to take the time to experience it for yourself. It's a gem in Freeport that we're lucky to have.
