As brick-and-mortar stores across the country continue to adjust to the ever-changing habits of shoppers, one thing has become abundantly clear: if you want people to visit your store, they need to be able to get in and out as quickly as possible.

This is why self-checkout lanes have become wildly popular in Maine. Many of the grocery store chains throughout Maine have utilized self-checkout lanes for the customers who want to get in and out of the store quickly, as well as those who would rather just handle the transaction themselves.

Larger retailers like Walmart and Target have also been operating with self-checkout lanes for the convenience of their customers. And it's the convenience element of the self-checkout lanes that has caused Target to make a significant change.

Select Target stores throughout Maine have activated a 10 item or less limit for self-checkout lanes. That will be welcome news for customers at some Target stores in Maine, where lines can extend more than 50 people deep on the busiest of days and times.

A Reddit post suggests the move to 10 items or less in self-checkout lanes is a nationwide initiative to curb wait times and ferry customers with larger loads to cashier lanes, where the checkout process should go smoother and quicker.

Whether or not Target stores will strictly enforce the 10 items or less limit remains to be seen. Months ago, there was debate over whether grocery stores should execute a similar item limit in their self-checkout lanes to avoid long lines and wait times for customers looking to speed in and out of the store.
