A website has crunched some numbers to put together a list of the most ghetto cities and towns in Maine. I don't think ghetto really is the proper term to be used, it does shine a light on the locations in Maine that I would rather call depressed.

Times are tough for everyone in Maine. Manufacturing, once the thrust behind Maine's economy, is long gone. People have had to transition into other lines of work and it hasn't always been easy. We're constantly trying attract new businesses to Maine to provide more jobs, but it's a long process.

RoadSnacks.com took a look at Maine to find its most 'ghetto' cities in Maine by defining ghetto as 'urban; of or relating to (inner) city life' and “poor; of or relating to the poor life.' They looked at household income levels, high school graduation rates, number of convenience stores, drug stores, discount stores and crime rates to come up with their list.

They came up with Sanford as Maine's most ghetto city, followed by Waterville, Lewiston, Skowhegan, and Augusta.

My hometown of Paris came in at number 16 and I can see that is definitely an economically depressed area. When I was growing up there was Paris Manufacturing, Wilner's Wood Products, A.C. Lawrence Tannery and many other manufacturers in town. Enough that everyone a good paying job and the city thrived. Today they're all gone and the biggest employer in town is Walmart.

Is your town on the list of the most 'ghetto' in Maine. Take a look at the list below and let us know if you agree in the comments below or on Facebook and Twitter.
