Here's some advice...while walking along the trails at the Falmouth Nature Preserve, don't loose track of the trail markers.

Jen and I took Casco the dog for a walk in the Falmouth Nature Preserve. We absolutely love this really nice little day hike, walk.

So there we were, walking and chatting and walking and chatting when all of a sudden....we were lost.

Not Jen. She kept saying, 'Oh....this is a path.' 'This is a path....I think.' 'Where's the path?'

That's when I decided to download a compass app. Of course...I was thinking secretly, 'What good will that do us??' But Jen had on her Ranger Rick hat and was determined to save us now that we had a compass.

Obviously we lived...and I was never afraid of dying (well, sorta not) but I was afraid of trying to find our way home in the dark. That did not happen - we eventually, purely accidentally, ran back into one of the trails!

During our horrifying death escape walk, I did see some cool stuff. First and foremost, load up on your favorite bug spray. I prefer the ones that give you a third eye. The bugs were out and they were hungry!

Prior to getting lost I saw this tucked inside a tree.

I thought....mmm, someone's lunch? Nope. It's a geocaching treasure. I'm not that familiar with geocaching and was not prepared to contribute, but I did open the goodie box.

It's kinda neat. There were little notebooks where people signed in and left notes and a couple of little treasures. I didn't have a pen. Plus, I thought writing 'HELP! WE'RE LOST!' would be too silly.

When we were traipsing through very uncharted territory*, we came across a bat box. I'm all for it. I love me a bat.  Apparently these bat boxes are little bird houses for bats. Bats eat bugs like mosquitoes and there was plenty for the bats to eat last night!

Then things started getting serious as we were NOT finding a path back to civilization.  Fearing I would never eat again, I had a snack.

I'm kidding. I found it that way.

Somehow (Jen takes full credit) we ran across a clearly marked path and made it back to our car...about an hour beyond schedule.

So, if you stay on the paths, check out the Falmouth Nature Preserve. It's very cool.

*don't think the thought of dying in the woods 2 miles from my house didn't cross my mind.
