A Historic Home on a Remote Island in Casco Bay Belonged to a North Pole Explorer
Admiral Robert Peary is said to be the first explorer to reach the North Pole in 1909. Although some dispute this huge claim, it remains that Adm. Peary left his mark on the world of exploration and discovery. After his monumental adventure in the North Pole, Peary returned to the home he built just off Harpswell on Eagle Island in Casco Bay.
The amazing home on the point of Eagle Island was constructed with a room that mimics the wheelhouse of a ship. The curved stone walls and stained-glass windows provide views of surrounding islands and the open ocean.
The island and the home were named to the National Register of Historic Places. You can tour the island and Admiral Peary's stunning restored home from June 15 through Labor Day. A shuttle boat service will take you to and from the island.
