There are some familiar names on this year's list of the 'Best Places to Work in Maine'.

Mainebiz reported on a list of businesses that include some that are always named like Machias Savings Bank, Allagash Brewing Co., and Cianbro.

Mainebiz does point out a couple of new great places, like Purdy Powers & Co., they are an accounting firm.

Who decides which businesses in Maine are the 'Best Places to Work'?

There are 134 businesses and other organizations that made the list (that's how many were for 2023). The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management, Best Companies Group, and Bridge Tower Media from Minneapolis, have been picking the 'best places' for 19 years.

The requirements are that you have to be either a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity that is at least one year old, has an actual building, and has at least 15 full or part-time workers in Maine.

There are two pieces of criteria: an evaluation of each nominee's workplace policies, practices, and demographics, worth approximately 25% of the company's score. Then the bulk of it is from employees with a survey. That makes up 75% of the score. Straight from the horse's mouth.

Suzanne Fischer-Huettner from Bridge Tower Media told Mainebiz,

The 2024 Best Places to Work in Maine have created workplaces that inspire success. They put their employees’ welfare first, creating a positive work environment for all.

The rankings are split into small employers (15-49 employees), medium employers (50-249 employees), and large employers (250 or more employees).
