Cooper Flagg, the Newport, Maine, native and No. 1 NBA draft pick in 2025, was spotted in the state recently, and he was kind enough to stop for a picture with fans.

The 19-year-old star forward for the Dallas Mavericks had multiple Maine events he was attending (and hosting) in August, so it's no surprise the guy would be out and about grabbing something to eat, too.

For all his awards and accomplishments, it's great to see that Flagg still makes time for the people back home.

For Mainers Brittany Curtis and Laura Emery, Wednesday, August 12, was just supposed to be a fun girls' night for dinner at Cervesas Southwest Grill in Newport, Maine. But the two would be in for the surprise of a lifetime when they happened to spot Cooper Flagg.

The Dallas Mavericks list him at a towering 6 feet 9 inches, so it's probably pretty tough to try and hide who he is, let alone the fact that he's one of the most famous and recognizable Mainers.

Turns out, Flagg was leaving with some takeout when Curtis and Emery stopped to ask for a selfie. He agreed, and the two got an epic picture that they shared with the Eastern Maine Sports Facebook page.

It looks like Cervesas Southwest Grill is well regarded, as, according to TripAdvisor, it's the No. 2-rated restaurant in Newport. And Google reviews score it a 4.4 out of 5.

It is worth noting that the Mexican restaurant recently posted an update on Facebook about ongoing staffing struggles and cutting back on takeout availability during peak hours.

It's a reminder that even well-loved local spots can run into hardship, so if you're in the area, consider giving this over-20-year Newport staple some love.

Why Was Cooper Flagg in Maine in August 2026?

It's not like Flagg needs an actual purpose to visit his hometown, let alone Maine, but he was in the state for two specific reasons.

On August 13, the basketball star hosted the Flagg Golf Classic tournament at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, and on August 15 and 16, he and his brother are running a kids' basketball camp in Orono.

(And sometimes you just want to eat at a restaurant from back home.)

Flagg may have gone big time, but it's clear from his trip back to Maine that his roots run deep and his ability to give back on and off the court is just as strong.

Maybe he'll pop up at a local card shop next?
