Craigslist Apartment Ad From Biddeford Suggests “Blacks Should Not Apply”
UPDATE: Since our initial posting of this, more information has come to light. People close to the person who's name we redacted have stated this is unequivocally a fake posting intended to hurt him. If you have any information on who posted this ad, please contact Biddeford police.
Passed on to us from a concerned listener was this Craigslist ad posted on Wednesday. While a quick glance at the ad doesn't raise any red flags, there's a small portion of it that deserves a double take.
Yes, you read that right. The poster of this ad states that BLACKS SHOULD NOT APPLY. It is against the law to discriminate against a person based on their race when renting an apartment in Maine.
This ad was quickly taken down by whomever posted it early on Wednesday. There was a name attached to the bottom of the ad that we've redacted for one particular reason. We could not confirm that the person's name that appeared in the ad was actually the person that posted it.
However, this is a snapshot into the kind of ads, and potential discrimination, that still exists on a daily basis in many communities throughout the state of Maine.
