It’s International Left Handers Day! Here’s Why It’s So Rare To Be A Lefty

Here's something you may not know about me - I'm left handed! I'm proud to be a lefty, so I was excited to see that today is National Left Handers Day. According to Wikipedia, it's a day to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of the left handers. The day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of the Lefthanders International, Inc. Did you know that us lefties make up only about ten percent of the population?

So why are lefties lefties anyway? According to livescience.com, A recent study by Northwestern University gives us some insight. They developed a mathematical model that shows the low percentage of lefties is a result of the balance between cooperation and competition in human evolution.

The most important factor for an efficient society is a high degree of cooperation. In humans, this has resulted in a right-handed majority.
