I went ice fishing with my 7-year-old son Jake this weekend (or Jacob depending on what he prefers to be called that day). It was his first time and my first time since I was about his age.

I have no idea how to do this, but luckily my friends are pros at this. They taught Jake the fine art of jigging, which really translates to standing at a hole in the ice and jerking a fishing line for hours hoping to get a bite. Sounds boring to me, but he loved it and was at it for hours!

He however did take a break from his jigging duties when we saw a flag on one of the traps pop up across the lake. We all rushed out to check it and found that the fish had taken the bait, so the trap was reset and we stood there chatting.

Within a minute the flag popped back up, and I yelled "FLAG!" My friend Gary the fisherman looked around the lake asking "where?." I pointed right at his feet. Now he grabs the line and he's got one!

This large mouth is nothing compared to the lake trout that Steve Schafer caught in Canada, but it was definitely the highlight of the trip for both me and Jake and a day we'll never forget.
