Major Dempsey Center Fundraiser Raises Over $1 Million in Maine
The 17th annual Dempsey Challenge, a fundraiser for the Dempsey Center, took place over the weekend.
According to an article on the WGME website, the event helps raise money for the Dempsey Center and brings people together for an important cause. This year, participants came from all over, including Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and even from outside the country. More than 2,300 people took part in this year's event.
Patrick Dempsey, the Maine native and actor said:
It’s just beautiful to see the community coming together, and I think that’s a great thing about Lewiston, Auburn, and Maine in general. When people are in need, they’re there for each other
The weekend event offered something for everyone. There was a 5k walk and run, a 10k run, several bike ride distances including 10, 25, 50, and 65 miles, along with a gravel ride, a kids run, and an honor walk.
In total, this year's event collected more than $1.6 million for the Dempsey Center.
What is the Dempsey Center?
According to the organization's website, the Dempsey Center was founded by actor Patrick Dempsey in 2008.
He was inspired to start the organization after what he had seen his mother go through when she was battling cancer.
While Maine has some amazing oncologists and cancer treatment centers, the Dempsey Center fills in the gaps not covered by hospitals. The center provides the support so that patients can focus on their battle with cancer.
Examples of this include transportation, counseling, group support sessions, and information about nutrition.
There are locations in Lewiston, Westbrook, and Portland. And, many services are offered virtually.
