Is there anything better than jumping into the water on a hot summer day in Maine?

We’ve got no shortage of options, either. Between our lakes, ponds, rivers, swimming holes and miles of coastline, you could probably spend the entire summer trying out different places to cool off.

So, we decided to ask the experts: Mainers. We asked our Facebook followers one simple question: Where’s your favorite place to go swimming in Maine?

And apparently, some of you are very protective of your swimming spots. A few people flat-out refused to tell us because they didn’t want more people showing up. Honestly, I respect it.

Others gave us some classic answers like “in the water,” while quite a few people said their favorite swimming spot is simply their own backyard pool. No driving, no parking and no fighting for a spot on the beach. Hard to argue with that.

Where Do Mainers Love to Go Swimming?

For those who actually gave us a location, the answers were all over the map.

We heard everything from ocean beaches like Old Orchard Beach, Wells Beach and Ogunquit Beach to swimming holes like Coos Canyon and Frenchman Hole. Plenty of Maine lakes and ponds made the list, too.

But one answer showed up more than any other: Sebago Lake. Sebago was mentioned again and again, making it the clear favorite among the responses we received.

Long Pond in Parsonsfield also got multiple shout-outs, along with Range Pond, Coos Canyon and Old Orchard Beach.

And then there were plenty of places that only got one mention but still deserve some love, including Schoodic Lake, Bunganut Lake, Hallowell Quarry, Popham Beach and several others.
