New Traffic Lights on Route 302 in Windham Will Be Operating Soon
Be aware if you're travelling on Route 302/Roosevelt Trail in Windham. New traffic lights have been installed and will be in use soon.
Where is the New Traffic Light Located?
The intersection in question is where Route 302/Rossevelt Trail intersects with Albion Road.
I drive through this intersection every day on my way to work and back home. There have been several accidents here because of speed, inattentiveness, and a big blind spot for those turning left onto Albion Road. Cars in the turning lane block the view of oncoming cars from the west, so if you aren't careful, you could easily get t-boned.
Windham Residents Pushed For the New Traffic Light
Originally, the Town of Windham planned to solve the traffic issue by installing single flashing yellow lights on Route 302 and flashing red lights on Albion Road.
Residents weren't too happy because they felt the intersection was too dangerous to just have a blinking light.
The Maine DOT listened and changed the plan by switching to installing traditional traffic lights with turning arrows on the westbound and eastbound lanes. This should help solve the problem of the blind spot that makes it difficult for drivers to make that left turn. I've have had some close calls there from people who were going too fast.
When Will the Lights Be Active?
As of this writing, the lights are in place but are covered with plastic. They look like dark garbage bags, which seems pretty standard for installed traffic lights that have yet to be activated.
I have been unable to find a date for them to go live, but it won't be long. Keep an eye out as you approach this intersection and be prepared to stop if the light turns red. It may take a little while to get used to this, so drive safely.
