This Coastal Gem Was Named the Most Overlooked Town in Maine

An island town in Downeast Maine has been given some serious and deserved recognition.

The popular travel site Love Exploring recently published a very interesting article about the country's most underrated towns. In fact, the site selected the most underrated town from each state. Maine's representative was the small coastal village of Stonington.

Located on the southern half of Deer Isle Island, Stonington is a town of just a little over 1,000 residents. The island community is mostly known for its massive lobster production. It's consistently a top lobster processor in Maine, and one of the largest in the entire country.

However, Stonington is much more than that. It's a town located right in the heart one of Maine's most beautiful areas. It's not far from both Midcoast Maine and Mount Desert Island.

Stonington also looks like it's right out of a reference book of what a small Maine island community should look like. Beautiful homes cover the coastline, marine wildlife is prevalent, local shops and eateries grace the downtown, and did I mention all that lobster?

But don't just take my word for it. Here is a little of why Love Exploring selected Stonington as Maine's most underrated town.

...It's a creative spot, packed with artists' studios and dinky galleries, and there's an opera house for live music and theatre too. Foodies will be satisfied – Maine lobster is a staple here and you can eat it while looking over the bay.

I think I should also mention the allure of its remoteness. I mean, we are talking about a village on the southern tip of an island that has one way in and out. It's more than likely always going to have a wonderfully charming remoteness about it.

Congrats to Stonington on making this prestigious list. I always love seeing the under-appreciated places in Maine receiving the recognition they deserve.

Now, does this mean Stonington isn't underrated anymore? Will it now be overrated, because we all call it underrated? I'm going to end the article before I get even more confused.
