I am not going to lie to you, my friend. The last few months have been pretty tough for people who know and love the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

One by one, so many of our favorite spots seem to be closing their doors for good.

First, it was Earth Eagle Brewing (don't worry, their Somersworth location is still thriving!)

Then Stonewall Kitchen announced they are closing in March after 26 years in their Pleasant Street location.

And then, as if we hadn't been through enough, The Franklin Restaurant announced they would also be closing in March 2025.

Change is inevitable. Every city evolves and goes through different seasons; that is to be expected. The disheartening part is the rapid pace in which so many of our favorite places are closing.

You can't help but wonder if this is their decision or if external factors that are beyond their control are forcing them to leave. I fear it is the ladder.

Gilley's in Portsmouth, New Hampshire Open Again

Needless to say, Portsmouth enthusiasts are in dire need of some good news. Thankfully a few days ago our prayers we're answered.

Everyone's favorite Fleet Street nostalgic diner has made a comeback. Of course I am talking about the burger flipping, hot dog slinging trolley known as Gilley's.

Gilley's is an absolute Portsmouth institution. It first opened in 1912 and the legend goes that their very first employee was a guy named Ralph Gilbert also known as Gilley.

After a few months of uncertainty, Gilley's reopened this past weekend with an awesome new Kitchen manager named John Gray. John is no stranger to the Portsmouth food scene. He worked in the kitchen at Buffalo Wild Wings when they were in Newington, the Thirsty Moose, and most recently Martingale Wharf.

John said:

“I’m honored to carry on the legacy of Gilley’s Diner and excited about its future growth.Having lived in the local area for the past ten years, I have fond memories of this establishment—it’s always been a place that feels like home, with that small-town charm. I’m especially looking forward to collaborating with long-time staff member Arlene Mullikin and ensuring we consistently deliver the quality experience our patrons know and love.”

The whole Gilley's crew is very excited for this next chapter with John as their fearless leader:
