A Guide to Surviving Maine’s Black Fly Season Without Losing Your Mind
Let's define what a black fly is first.
What are black flies?
Black flies (buffalo gnats) are small dark flies that come out during early summer and late spring -WebMd
In layman's terms, they're just annoying little flies that tend to misunderstand what window and door screens are.
The most annoying sound in the world you ask?
The way these ding dongs just repeatedly bang their heads into the screens on my windows until they lose the battle and die in my window pane. Or until my electric zapper is charged again. Kidding..hehe..yeah, I'm kidding.

Where are black flies found?
These little annoyances are actually found in a place that perfectly describes Maine (damnit). The same reasons we love the beautiful scenery in Maine during the summertime is also why we're a perfect environment for them, damnit.
Here's what I do at home to try to minimize their damn presence once spring rolls around since that seems to be their hot spot.
Honestly, just remember to shut your screen doors behind you. This is where it all starts. I know it sounds so silly and such a small task but it's proactive.
I hate to also say the obvious, but wearing long sleeves and pants is the key to keeping them from biting your skin.
My tip though is wearing a "base layer" which is a thin or sheer type of long sleeve that's light and breathable. So in the warmer nights this summer it'll more bearable to cover up.
Cool areas, spray repellant, and peppermint oil are all remedies that have worked for me in the past! Before we go, let me answer one of the most common questions about black flies in Maine this year.
Are black flies dangerous?
They can be. Here's what Perdue University's research has to say:
"Reactions to black fly bites that collectively are known as "black fly fever" include headache, nausea, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. In eastern North America, only about six black fly species are known to feed on humans. Several other species are attracted to humans, but they typically do not bite".
On that note, enjoy your summer LOL! Here's a pallet cleanser below to all the concerts happening this summer where you'll need to bring your repellent I'm sure:
