Jay, Maine, Police Department Warns About Fake Money Circulating in Town
People in the town of Jay, Maine, are being asked by local law enforcement to keep an eye out for fake money that is making the rounds in town and being accepted as the real thing.
Unfortunately, it's easy to be fooled if you aren't paying close attention.
The Jay Police Department posted photos of these fake $100 bills on Facebook. At first glance, they look legit, because they were legally made to look completely legitimate and for a reason that doesn't involve forgery.
If you take a closer look at these bills, you'll see that they aren't legal tender but serve a purpose. I've highlighted everything on the front that indicates it's not legal tender.
And here's everything on the back.
As you can see, this fake money is a movie prop.
Whenever you see wads of cash in a movie it looks like the real deal, because the camera doesn't get close enough to see the marks like "For Motion Picture Purposes" and "In Prop We Trust."
Scam artists use this prop money to try to slip by cashiers, hoping they won't pay close attention to them.
Anytime you are handed a large bill as a cashier, it's always a good idea to check to make sure it isn't prop money like this. Even if someone you know is making a private purchase in cash with you, it's not a bad idea to give the money a look to be sure it's the real thing.
