A handful of police departments throughout Maine are participating in the "Gun Giveback Program" on May 11 according the Bangor Daily News.

Bring your old, unused, or unwanted firearms to any of the police stations listed below and turn them in in a safe and legal manner, without risking a used gun falling into the hands of the wrong person (like your neighbor's kid). From there, your guns will be shipped securely to Raw Tools, a Colorado company that melts down the metal from used firearms and forges the material into gardening tools.

Never fear; your guns aren't gone forever. Those tools will be shipped back to Maine to be sold at local law enforcement events.

The current list of participating police departments are:

— Brunswick

— Cape Elizabeth

— Gorham

— Falmouth

— Portland

— Scarborough

— South Portland

— Wells

— Yarmouth
