Maine Loves Whoopie Pies, but Here’s Why I Don’t
I gotta be nothing but honest here guys. Maine's little beloved whoopie pie is just not in my vocabulary. The hatred is so severe that it's obviously half a trauma response and half a health issue. Here we go, buckle up for my girl math explanations.
It all started about 9 years ago when I first moved to Maine for radio and had to learn all the little quirks the state is known for. I actually thought a whoopie pie was a whoopie cushion until I went to my first Portland Sea Dog's game and quickly learned that is not the case.
Turns out this state absolutely adores sugary, mushy and creamy desserts other wise known as, the whoopee pie. In fact it's one of our signature foods.

What is a Maine whoopie pie?
By definition as per Maine.gov;
"In 2011, the Maine State Legislature designated the whoopie pie as Maine's official state treat. This confection traditionally consists of two chocolate cake-like rounds surrounding a white cream filling. The popular treat is reported to have been baked in Maine since 1925".
How many calories are in one whoopie pie?
This one I would say is the biggest factor for me. As a fitness girly or just somebody who likes to watch their sugar intake, I can't get behind voluntarily eating almost 400 calories in just a few bites.
Calories in one whoopie pie: 200-400 as per thewhoopiebakeryco.
I can't help it man, I take one look at the fluffy thing and all I can think about is how I'd get a serious stomach ache after one of those.
To me, it's not worth it but as mentioned above, the whoopie pie is Maine's official sweet treat which means enough people still love them. Power to ya.
Disclaimer: I have nothing against companies that make or sell these desserts. It's a good thing if you do, it's a Maine staple!
