This is just another reason to love your Portland, Maine, Sea Dogs!

In June of 2023, the Portland Sea Dogs set out to set a world record. Most home runs in a game? Most foul balls caught by fans? No. This world record had nothing to do with baseball. It was all about the whoopie pie. They wanted to set a world record outside of Hadlock Field for the longest line of whoopie pies.

According to Mainebiz, the Portland Sea Dogs called on Wicked Whoopies out of Freeport to design a giant whoopie pie. The Sea Dogs' vice president of communications and fan experience told Mainebiz,

We wanted at least 2,000 whoopie pies and 2,121 just happened to be what it took to complete the design of the whoopie pie line that was created by Wicked Whoopies. We didn't know exactly how many it would be until it was completed.

Sometimes the whoopie pie, Maine's official state treat, is called a black moon because of the two cakes with a creamy filling. The record was set on June 9, 2023, and was the first of its kind. It was JUST recently acknowledged as a record! Wicked Whoopies, led by owner Amy Bouchard, had a party at its store in downtown Freeport.

Why did the Portland Sea Dogs want to have a whoopie pie record?

A couple of things came together for the big record. There was a whoopie pie brainstorming session with Wicked Whoopies and the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival (think they served whoopie pies?). Plus, on the record-setting night, the Sea Dogs became the Maine Whoopie Pies to take on the Akron Rubber Ducks. Of course, our beloved HALL OF FAME mascot, Slugger, was there. I think he's a huge fan of whoopie pies.

What happened to the 2,121 whoopie pies after the Portland Sea Dogs broke the record?

If you were at the game in June 2023, you left with a whoopie pie! Get ready for your nine-inning vacation. Opening day for the Portland Sea Dogs is Friday, April 5, at 6 p.m. against the Hartford Yard Goats. And in case you are now craving a whoopie pie, this year’s Maine Whoopie Pie Festival is June 22 in Dover-Foxcroft.
