Maine water customers received a text message Monday letting them know that extra chlorine was added to tap water over the weekend because of heavy rains, snow melting possibly affecting the Saco River the Sun Journal reports.

The text message read;

Your water is safe to drink and in full compliance with all regulatory requirements. We expect the water will clear the system within the next 24 hours. We apologize for any inconvenience,” the text message read. “Please call 1-800-287-1643 with questions.”

More than 32,000 homes from Biddeford to Scarborough may have noticed an elevated chlorine smell or taste from their tap water but, according to the article, the water is safe to drink says Maine Water Company officials.

But some customers aren't happy with the way this situation was handled wondering why the water company waited a few days before sending the text message.

Any extra chlorine that was added to tap water should be flushed out by now, if your water is smelling or tasting funny, please contact the water company 1-800-287-1643.
