Portland has voted to have a $15 minimum wage for its workers.
The initiative was passed last night overwhelmingly on election day.

It seems people working in service industries such as restaurants and retail are rejoicing as then being essential workers, and making under $15.00 an hour has been a bone of contention since the beginning of the pandemic.

This mandate would also mandate employers to pay employees time and a half during emergency periods, which we happen to be in right now.

This all seems promising, paired with the city passing a rent control initiative. However, according to the Portland Press Herald, the city council and Mayor were opposed to this measure and affordable housing proponents.

Will these new rules ultimately help Portland's city overcome its economic shortfalls and find new housing for people who live here?

Only time will tell. That being said, you can hear the angst of the people who live here and the need for change.
