I had a great vacation this past week with my son Jake with a lot of time spent at camp with him and our friends. One of the best moments of the entire week is when we went for a short ride through western Maine on an ATV.

Jake was excited when our friends asked if he and I wanted to go for a ride in their Kawasaki Teryx4. It's a four seater, side by side ATV that is like a souped up golf cart that can climb over just about anything.

We hit the trails in Waterford near Melby's Market and as we traveled deeper and deeper into the woods, I started to notice old stone walls lining the trail.

I wish I knew the history, but these walls must have been here for centuries, possibly when the road that is now an ATV trail was carved for horses and carriages.

Were these old farmlands and the walls marked land ownership? Were the stones stacked on the side of the roads when they cut through the woods. What did this area look like 300 years ago? Things like this absolutely fascinate me and make me wish I had a time machine.

As we continued through the trail, it opened up quite a bit. A lot of the trail is bumpy, with pits and stumps that have to be traversed, but sometimes you can really let loose on a nice stretch of trail.

The height (literally) of the trip was this look out over the mountains of western Maine and New Hampshire. To the far left is Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, and in the distance stretch the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

This is the second time I had been up here and luckily this time black fly season was over. This picture of Jake and I is one I'm going to hang onto forever.
