Maine is the newest state to consider doing nonbinary birth certificates.

If you are unfamiliar with the term, Merriam Webster defines it as

Relating to or being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that is neither entirely male nor entirely female

According to the Portland Press Herald, this rule would not only allow parents to not have to identify the gender of the baby on the birth certificate but also would allow adults to change their gender identifiers as they please.

With this new proposed process, nonbinary identifiers will be able to separate themselves from the transgender population as they are two different groups, as stated by the Maine Transgender Network, an education and advocacy group which supports transgender people.

Now that being said, I am not sure what the process is here, but I can say the fact that we, as people, are at the point of having an honest discussion is a step in the right direction.
