Off-Season Adventures: These 4 Hallowell Eateries Will Blow Your Mind
Hallowell, Maine is off the beaten path as far as tourist destinations go, but it still catches a few as they travel through Augusta and beyond. It's a cozy small town along the Kennebec River with a bustling music scene and a growing a culinary destination. If you're looking for a weekend adventure in an adorable Maine village, Hallowell is a great place to visit.
1. The Liberal Cup
The Liberal Cup is a favorite among locals and out of towners, but when tourist season slows down you'll have a better chance at taking in the rustic bar atmosphere without the crowds. With rotating taps of their home-brewed beers and a classic pub fare menu, you'll find something for everyone at The Liberal Cup. Trivia night is always hopping and the live music rotates a few nights a week.
2. Quarry Tap Room
The Quarry Tap Room is a newer eatery in Hallowell but it's grown so fast they're expanding their offerings to an outdoor venue adjacent to the main restaurant. If you love beer, pub food, and unrivaled live music, The Quarry Tap Room is your spot. Trip Advisor reviewers say, "This is another great place to gather in Hallowell! We have eaten here a few times lately and have been very impressed. The fish and chips, the steak and cheese, and so many other fine choices should bring you back for more. Often! Maybe classic Poutine or a Poutine Burger? And the draft beer selection, posted on old chalkboards is extensive. Perfect!"
3. Scrummy Afters
Okay, so it's not a restaurant, but if you need dessert in Hallowell after fueling up at one of the other eateries, you've gotta visit Scrummy Afters. I'm willing to bet that this is the coolest candy store you've ever seen. Hilary, one of the owners, has a background in performing arts, which has lent itself to the incredible whimsical design of the Scrummy shop. You'll find your favorite nostalgia candies, fudge, gelato, and more plus some unexpected treats, too.
4. Cafe de Bangkok
Authentic Thai food, killer sushi, and an incredible view of the Kennebec River all wait for you at Cafe de Bangkok. The owners are great people, too. Not feeling pub fare or a heavy meal? Cafe de Bangkok's stir fry dishes, fried rice, and other Thai meals are the perfect alternative to the other styles of cuisine found in downtown Hallowell. Kids will love it here, too, because of the massive saltwater fish tank in the dining room. Can you find Nemo in there?
