Why are so many Portland, Maine restaurants closing?

For a while there it felt like every time I woke up I'd be greeted with yet another restaurant closure announcement. It was sad, but there was a reason, according to mainepublic.

"Rising food and labor costs have increased by nearly 30%, we have a worker shortage, which is further compounding these issues, as well as rent,” she said. Pierce said some restaurants are opening up outside of Portland in towns like Saco and Biddeford, where rents are more affordable." -Kathleen Pierce of Hospitality Maine

Permanently closed restaurants in Portland, Maine

Amongst all the closures we've seen in the past couple years, I've noticed there are a few that have hit me harder than the others.

I have to start this rant out with Sister's Deli. Right downtown near One City Center, Sisters was always the colorful sidewalk chalk you'd love looking at without even knowing it.

Steps away from our studio, I loved walking over there for a half sandwich they offered on the menu because their portions were so big. I bet you can't look at this photo below without drooling.

Another favorite gem that permanently closed is Salvage BBQ and we need it back now. It was located on the end of Congress St. near the Sea Dogs Stadium which gave it its own little "outskirts" charm.

Bingo every Tuesday was insane, I'm not even embarrassed to tell you my friends and I crushed that weekly.

Lastly, but not least, I think we all wish we could have one last night at Brian Boru.

Though not many went for the food specifically, there was nothing like chugging Guinness on St. Patrick's Day on their second floor deck.

Sadly, the structure of the building is still just sitting there, vacant and making us all sad when we drive by it. At least the giant iconic toucan painting is still there to dry our tears.
