I shop at a lot of different grocery stores in the state and it all depends on where I am at the time. I shop mostly in Portland, but semi-frequently grab groceries in North Windham, Topsham, Westbook, Oxford, Bridgton and Naples. The grocery stores are the same, but the people can be very different.

I do a lot of people watching while I shop. Don't tell me you don't, because you do. I noticed recently that a lot of customers do something in Portland that I've never seen in any other store. They shop while wearing earbuds.

Be it music, podcasts or audio books, they're walking around doing their shopping while in a different world. I don't know about you, but I can't deal with that distraction. Maybe it's just because I'm older than the 20-somethings I see doing this, and there are a lot in Portland, but I don't get it.

I need to hear what's going on around me when shopping. I need to know there's a squeaky cart barreling down on me to get out of the way. To me, it would be like wearing earbuds while driving. The world is shut out.

Is this really only a Portland thing? Do you wear earbuds while you shop? Let us know in the comments below or on our Facebook page.
