National Geographic has an "essential guide to visiting Maine," which can be handy for covering the basics of the Pine Tree State.

But overall, it feels like just that: the basic starter pack.

You can probably guess some of the travel guide's six reasons to visit Maine without looking.

They were:

  • Acadia National Park
  • Mount Katahdin
  • Lobsters
  • Lighthouses
  • L.L. Bean
  • Woodsy Camp Culture

Look, yes, they are all great reasons in their own right.

Who doesn't love the beauty of Acadia? How incredibly delicious is Maine lobster? Where else can you see a giant 13-foot tall boot outside an iconic outdoors store synonymous with the state?

But it feels like a list for first-timers visiting for one quick weekend. There are so many more reasons that dive a bit deeper that would have been great to also make National Geographic's list. Almost like some bonus suggestions to level up the Maine experience.

Here are just five of them that should have/could have been added to their list.

What about Camden Hills State Park? It has breathtaking coastal views with a number of trails for all levels. The crown jewel there is Mount Battie, where a short hike rewards you with an incredible look at Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay, and even Cadillac Mountain on a clear day.

How about Moosehead Lake? It's Maine's largest lake and a quiet escape where you can kayak, fish, or take a scenic seaplane tour.

It’s also one of the best places to spot moose.

Or what about switching up the seafood experience from just lobster?

Taste Atlas has named three Maine places (Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery, The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport and Five Islands Lobster Co in Georgetown) as having the best fried clams in the world.

Whoopie pies are a delicious reason to visit Maine, and they are the state dessert.

You’ll find classic chocolate-and-vanilla versions as well as creative flavors like pumpkin, maple, and blueberry at bakeries and markets. Maine has some of the best in the world!

And don't forget Maine's ski mountains.

The state has some renowned resorts like Sunday River and Sugarloaf, which offer up a variety of trails for all skill levels excited to tackle that fresh powder.

National Geographic’s list certainly covers the basics, but it only cracks the surface of reasons to visit Maine. And you've likely got so many more great reasons you could spout off.
