Little has changed as far as clearing snow from the streets of Portland since the 1940's. Other than the lack of snow blowers or snow throwers, moving snow remains pretty much the same.

Some notable differences include dumping the snow into the Fore River which is a big no no these days due in part to trash and pollutants in the snow, and good ol' man power as workers in this video from the Maine Historical Society shovel snow in to waiting dump trucks from the vicinity of the Back Cove.
