The 10 Busiest Bridges in Maine That Are In Poor Condition

A new report issued by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association shows that Maine has some bridges that are in rough shape.

The 2019 report designates bridges in the United States that are “structurally deficient," meaning the deck, superstructure, substructure or culverts, are rated in poor or worse condition.

Overall 13.1% of bridges in Maine are deemed structurally deficient by the ARTBA. That's a lot. Of even greater concern is the bridges on the list that see the most traffic.

Here's the list of the 10 most traveled bridges in Maine that have been listed as structurally deficient.

Numbers 1 and 2 - I-295 Overpass of Lafayette Street (Route 88) in Yarmouth

There are two bridges on the list at this location, one northbound and one southbound.

3. I-295 Overpass of Veranda Street and US Route 1 in Portland

4. I-95/Maine Turnpike Overpass of Mousam River in York

5. Congress Street, Route 9 and 22 Over the Stroudwater River in Portland

6. Sarah Long Bridge in Kittery

The old Sarah Long Bridge is what the report is referring to as the data is from 2018, before the bridge was replaced.

7. Route 1 in Woolwich

This bridge over the marsh is just past the Taste of Maine Restaurant

8. Frank J. Wood Bridge in Brunswick

Numbers 9 and 10 - Stillwater Avenue Bridge in Old Town

These are two bridges that span two channels of the Stillwater River
