More construction, or in this case "destruction" will be happening at Exit 45, the Maine Mall exit on the Maine Turnpike and that means that it will have to be shut down this weekend.

Exit 45 has been reconstructed as a diamond interchange to help the flow of traffic and to make getting through the toll plaza much easier. Now that toll plazas have been added to the on-ramps of The Maine Turnpike, traffic will flow much smoother rather than 6 lanes of traffic jockeying for positions at the old, single toll booth.

Now construction crews need to tear down the old toll plaza that is no longer needed and open up that area to allow traffic to freely flow through. The good news is they should be able to get it done over the weekend if all goes according to plan. The bad news is that Exit 45 needs to be closed while the work is being done.

The closure will begin Friday, October 21 at 9 a.m. and reopen on Monday, October 24 by 6 a.m. in time for the morning commute.

If you're traveling southbound on the Turnpike headed to the mall during the closure, take Exit 46, the Jetport exit, and turn left to get to the mall area. If you're traveling north on the Turnpike, take Exit 44 to I-295 and then Exit 1 to loop back around on the Maine Turnpike approach to exit to the mall area before the tool booth that is being demolished.

It's a little bit of an inconvinence, but when it's all done, getting on and off at the Maine Mall exit will be so much easier.
