Ok, so I have never lived or worked in an area where big ol' parking bans were a regular thing in the winter. So, while some of you may click on this to just be like, "Duh, Brittany," hear me out.

This is my second winter working in Portland and I never really thought about where the heck the cars go and how one is supposed to get their car back. I'm grateful I don't live in Portland because honestly, I wouldn't want to have to worry about putting my car somewhere every time it snowed.

Thankfully to satisfy my curiosity, Portland Maine Police Department gave the rundown on their Facebook page.

In a nutshell, during a citywide ban or a peninsula zone ban, cars go to Portland's impound lot which is here:

And they can be contacted at 207-774-3025. Don't sleep on getting your car back though, they do eventually get re-towed to towing company's lots.

If it's a yellow ban they go to the individual lots and skip the city impound. In this case, you'll want to call police dispatch at 207-874-8575.

To keep on top of the bans check the Portland Maine Police Department page or the City of Portland Facebook page who does a great job explaining further details about what a yellow ban is.

Now, like me, you know!
