About 20 years ago, the original Independence Day had one of the most memorable Super Bowl trailers of all-time. Today, Independence Day returned to the Super Bowl with a commercial for the upcoming sequel (subtitled Resurgence), but could it hold a candle to the original?

While the Independence Day 2 Super Bowl trailer probably won’t be remembered as fondly as the trailer for the original film (it may not even be the most remembered trailer from this year’s Super Bowl), it did pretty much what any good Independence Day footage should do: giant spaceships, destruction of famous landmarks and Jeff Goldblum.

One person who isn’t around this time around is Will Smith. Director Roland Emmerich said he wanted Smith to return and had some positive talks with the star, but Smith had just come off the disappointing After Earth, and was wary of starring in yet another big sci-fi film (which is weird considering that Will Smith is basically Will Smith because of big sci-fi films).

Here’s what Fox tells us about the upcoming Independence Day sequel:

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

In addition to Goldblum, Resurgence stars Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and someone named Angelababy. You can check out the film’s new poster below.
