There's a strange thing that happens to everyone who grows up in Maine: It becomes part of you. Whether you attempt to escape by moving to another state, or country, there are just things about this little place we call home that you just can't shake. We know there are more, but we've put together a list of 9 things that will always remind us that Maine is definitely home.

ITALIAN SANDWICHES

Whether it's Sam's or Amato's or your local corner store, Italian sandwiches are an essential part of people's diet here in Maine. Extra oil please.

THE SMELL OF THE OCEAN

Other states have it, but nothing smells quite like the ocean in Maine. The sun setting on the coastline teamed with that amazing smell makes living here totally worth it.

WE STILL TALK/HELP STRANGERS

How many times have you seen strangers helping someone on the side of a busy road. It doesn't happen other places but it will ALWAYS happen here. Kindness goes a long way.

GOING TO L.L. BEAN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT JUST BECAUSE WE CAN

If you need to pick up a pair of bean boots at 4 a.m., don't worry, the store in Freeport is open. All the time. Everyday. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

PAT CALLAGHAN READING THE 6 O'CLOCK NEWS

We don't want to know how long Pat Callaghan has been doing the 6 p.m. newscast, we just don't ever want it to end. We just keep hoping Pat is wearing Chucks while doing it.

RED HOT DOGS

We feel bad for the rest of the country that has no idea how well red snappers pair with beans or how good they taste grilled up. More for us, less for you. Sorry, bub.

BOB MARLEY'S STAND UP (NSFW)

Nobody has been able to catch the sad, sick and stupid things we do here in Maine better than Bob Marley. Even if he did the same set every single time, we'd watch it.

WE HAVE 5 SEASONS IN MAINE, NOT 4

Muddin' season counts! As much as we complain about winter, we'd miss it. And even though summer is too short, we make the best of it.

THE LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS HERE ARE UNLIKE ANY OTHER PLACE

So many people from Maine hold on to friends they made in elementary school, high school or just from their neighborhoods. People "from away" can attest, you don't find that kind of loyalty everywhere. Or maybe anywhere ... but Maine.
