A Prison From the 1800’s In Maine Is For Sale…And Yes, The Cell Blocks Are Still In There
Of all the creepy places you could live, wouldn't an old prison from the 1800's be at the top of the list? If you have no fear, or just love the old charm of a few cell blocks, then perhaps the former York County Jail in Alfred, Maine is just for you. It's for sale, and it's reasonably priced to boot.
According to WGME, the hard-to-miss old prison on Route 111 in Alfred has been standing as a reminder of days gone by. The prison was constructed in 1869, and once housed male and female inmates. A revolt amongst those inmates led York County to decide the building had served its purpose, and it was put up for sale. It's current owner, Michael Kaplan, purchased the property in 2001.
Kaplan has made small improvements over the years, but the prison still needs lots of work for whomever, or whatever, wants to call it home. Over the past several years, potential businesses have inquired about the property, including Dunkin Donuts, but nothing has ever panned out. Kaplan believes the old jail is a perfect home for a antiques shop, a photo gallery or a future craft brewery.
So how much is it? A reasonable $250,000 for 14,000 square feet of potential space. There's also 3 acres of surrounding land that come as part of the purchase price. And in case you thought the old cell blocks have been removed, think again. WGME captured a couple of different photos that show the property's interior.
