Patrick Dempsey may be a big Hollywood movie star, but he'll always be a Mainer.

The Lewiston native who has been acting since the '80s has continued to hold a special place in his heart for the Pine Tree State, often returning to Maine to show his support and appreciation to the people and area.

Dempsey's charm and talent have made him a recognizable name in TV and film, and one Mainers are proud to call one of their own.

In addition to his acting career, Dempsey's philanthropic efforts are well-known in Maine. He founded The Dempsey Center in Lewiston in 2008, which provides free support services to individuals and families affected by cancer, according to the nonprofit's website. The annual Dempsey Challenge, a run/walk/cycling event, draws participants from all over the world and raises significant funds for the center, showcasing Dempsey's ongoing commitment to his roots and those impacted by cancer.

In a 2021 interview with the Maine Mag, Patrick shared how strong the sense of community in Maine is but also that "there’s an altruistic nature to most Mainers and a real sense of giving back." And he's continued to do that himself.

He is probably best known for his role as Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd in well over 200 episodes of the ABC television show "Grey's Anatomy," but he's been in about 50 movies, too.

Are the critics always right? No. Of course not. It's just one take. In fact, there are a number of movies with low critic scores and high audience scores.

For example, Dempsey's movie with Reese Witherspoon, "Sweet Home Alabama" has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, and yet the audience score gives it a whopping 78%. Or what about "With Honors," starring Dempsey with Brendan Fraser and Joe Pesci, which gets a 19% critic score but a 74% audience score.

At the end of the day, while it's fun to see the scores connected to movies, it's not the end-all-be-all. You be the judge and decide which movies you love and which ones you'll never see again.
