Dollar General Opens Across the Street From Dollar Tree Store in Portland
Wow. That's a lot of dollars.
This is the first Dollar General store in Portland. Apparently, there was no other place for them except one-tenth of a mile away from a Dollar Tree store. Portland's first Dollar General is now open at 340 Allen Avenue (where Walgreens used to be) just down the road (quite literally) from Dollar Tree at 365 Allen Avenue.
It's the battle of the bargain! So which one is a better deal? According to GoBankingRates, it's Dollar General.
Dollar General and Dollar Tree are the two largest dollar-store chains in the U.S., but they’re actually very different. Dollar Tree (which also owns Family Dollar) does, in fact, sell some items for $1 and some for $1.25, but Dollar General doesn’t align as closely with its name. Yes, the store has deals, but sometimes for more than a crisp dollar bill. In fact, Business Insider found that most items at Dollar General cost $3 to $10. Even so, shopping here can still provide the best value — and perhaps the best experience.
The article went on to point out that Dollar Generals in general were cleaner and more organized. They are also stepping up inventory that is just a dollar. They have 18,000 locations and want to add fresh produce to around 10,000 of them. A clear advantage over their rival down the street that only offers frozen options.
Well, this sounds like it might be something that will take actual experience shopping to determine who has the better deal. Both offers about the same things including,
- Cleaning Supplies
- Food & Drinks
- Winter Holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas
- Personal Care Items
- Toys, Games, Puzzles & Books
- Craft Supplies
- Cooking & Baking Supplies
- Dinnerware & Serving Essentials
Well, you can't say you don't have a choice on the corner of Washington Avenue and Allen Avenue for some bargains.
