Fat Boy in Brunswick, Maine, has been around since 1955, creating an iconic legacy for itself as a go-to seasonal drive-in for locals and visitors alike: the frappes, the onion rings, the summer experience.

But with the popular restaurant still not open for the 2026 season, many have been wondering what the future holds.

Is there still hope for Fat Boy opening later this summer, or is it truly the end of an era? Here's what we know for now.

Will Fat Boy in Brunswick, Maine, Open for the 2026 Season?

As of Monday, June 8, Fat Boy in Brunswick, Maine, has remained closed since its last day of the 2025 season in September.

While opening day has shifted later into the spring over the years, moving from the likes of March into May, it's now well past its latest opening day from 2025 on May 17.

I reached out multiple times to Fat Boy on Facebook, asking for any update, but unfortunately got no response. Also, the phone number for the restaurant appears to be no longer in service.

Adding to the uncertainty is that the property is once again listed for sale.

Fat Boy in Brunswick, Maine, Listed for Sale Again in 2026

Fat Boy went up for sale in 2024, just a few years after it was purchased from the Burton family in 2020.

The listing remained active for over a year, dropping in price, but it still opened for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

It was quietly removed in May 2026, only to be relisted that same month for $695,000, but now with new listing agents Joseph Italiaander and Nate Roop of The Boulos Company.

One thing that stood out to me is that the original listing emphasized taking over Fat Boy and continuing on the legacy of the place, even highlighting that it was a "turnkey business with all FF&E included with the sale."

This new listing focuses more on the location and that it can have a "wide range of commercial uses: restaurant/dining, retail (Class I & II), office, service business, hotel, drive-through service, motor vehicle service/repair, financial institution, recreation facility, and more."

Of course, a new owner could still keep Fat Boy alive, and there's nothing stopping the current owner from opening later this summer. (Fingers crossed.)

But the change in messaging could mean some big changes in the future for the spot on Bath Road.

It's also important to remember that listings are designed to attract buyers, and there has been no official announcement indicating that Fat Boy is permanently closed.

But for those hoping to once again pull into the iconic Brunswick drive-in this summer, the lack of updates combined with the property's renewed listing has only added to the uncertainty surrounding its future.

Guess we'll have to wait to find out what's next.
