First thing you must do to pick out the perfect Christmas tree is have your Santa hat on.

A common mistake that people tend to make is that they get a tree that is way to big.  Measure the area and don't forget that the tree will be in a stand, so that will add some height to it. We literally stacked the kids on top of each other since we couldn't find the tape measure.

I also like my tree full but have to remember that it will be up for about 6-7 weeks...so branches that are nice and high will be relaxed and hanging out in the middle of the living room getting in the way of the TV.

I also went to a place on Washington Avenue in Portland called Tree Land.  It's a couple of brothers and they are super nice.  Ryan helped me and Jen and the 3 munchkins pick out our tree.  He also had some stuff that you pour in the water to keep it alive for 6 weeks.

Beyond that, I really have no tricks to picking out a tree.  You know the right one.  It's the one that you know you can fix the holes, bury the "icky side" and that the cat would love to climb up.
