Is This Globe at The Entrance to Deering Oaks Park in the 1930s Still In Existence Today?
An old photo was posted to the Portland Maine History 1786 to Present that shows the corner of State and Park Street at the entrance to Deering Oaks Park. A lot has changed in that area are you'll see from the photos below, but the two pillars on either side of State street still stand, with one thing missing.
Today the globe that sat on top of the pillar is no longer there.
It looked familiar to us, so we went out and took a look across the street from our One City Center studios and saw this.
It's not completely identical, but it looks really close. Here's a comparison of the two.
The base of the globe is gone but the globe itself looks very similar. Did the globe get salvaged, restored and placed at the entrance to One Monument Square?
A comment by the owner of the Portland Maine Portland Maine History 1786 to Present Facebook page made a comment about the globe with the posting.
So it doesn't appear to be an original globe, but it certainly is inspired by the original at Deering Oaks.
