What’s Happening With This Vacant Augusta, Maine, Building?

If you have spent much time traveling the side streets of Augusta, there is a good chance that you have been past the small, concrete building that sits just off Sewall Street.

People who have lived in the area for a long time will tell you that the building, which has been vacant for nearly a decade, was once the location of a Dunkin’.

Sometime around 2014 or 2015, that Dunkin’ location moved into a much larger location on Western Avenue.  The current location is just around the corner from the “kiosk” that the popular chain used to occupy.

Now, it looks like a new business may soon move into that long-vacant building.

If you have driven past the building at 67 Sewall Street, you may have noticed that some work is being done to the building’s exterior.

It almost looks as though the workers are in the process of building at least one new entrance for the building.

A quick check of Vision Government Solutions website page for the City of Augusta shows that the building was purchased by University Credit Union in September of 2023.  A search of the City of Augusta building permits shows that in December of 2023, the Orono-based credit union filed a permit to modify the building.

So what is going into the building?

Honestly, we don't know.  We are all just glad that the building is going to get some use.  It is always sad to see buildings go unused.

However, we can draw some conclusions based on the fact that University Credit Union purchased the building and is in the process of having work done on it.

We have reached out to the credit union's marketing department, but have yet to hear back from them.  So far, they have made no announcement about opening a Central Maine branch.

University Credit Union, founded in 1967, is a financial institution available to those live in Maine or have a connection to a Maine higher education institution.  They have locations in many of the state’s college towns and cities, including Orono, Bangor, Castine, and Portland.
