Visit Maine’s Tribute Wall to Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day
This Memorial Day weekend, the touching GoldStars Tribute Wall will be on display for all to see. This beautiful moment will take place at the Augusta Elks Lodge #964 and will offer all Mainers a deeply profound way to honor our fallen military heroes.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, and is an opportunity to honor the military and those who lost their lives in service to their country.
While many Americans use this as an unofficial start of summer and have parades, parties, and cookouts, the true essence of the holiday is a day of remembrance. A day to tip our hats and touch our hearts for the brave people who made the ultimate sacrifice so we are able to have those parties and parades.
Many of us have family members and loved ones who have fought for our country, and sadly, never came back. This touching tribute will be our chance to reflect on their sacrifice. This event will be free and open to all, providing an opportunity for you to pay homage to the men and women of the United States military.
The GoldStars Tribute Wall is a traveling memorial that honors those who died in service from the Gulf War through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, according to their website. Their mission and purpose is to ensure that these heroes are never forgotten. These walls serve as a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom.
The times to visit are from Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27, 2024.
The tribute will begin with an opening ceremony on Saturday at 10:00 AM and will feature the National Anthem by Rebecca Pushard, the Department of Corrections Color Guard, and remarks by Lorna Harris, President of American Gold Star Mothers Maine, in honor of her son SPC Dustin J Harris, who died in Iraq in 2006.
On Friday, May 24, the Patriot Riders and Augusta Elk Riders #964 will escort the GoldStars Tribute Wall from Yarmouth to the Elks Lodge. The ride will symbolizes the community's love and gratitude for the fallen heroes.
