Police: Suspect in Lewiston, Maine, Mass Shooting Found Dead
The man charged with killing 18 people in a Lewiston, Maine, bowling alley and billiards hall was found dead Friday night in Lisbon.
Maine Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said at around 7:45 p.m., the body of Robert Card was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head near the Maine Recycling Center where he used to work. The Recycling Center is not far from the Paper Mills Trail and Miller Park Boat Launch on Frost Hill, where Card's Subaru Outback was found after Wednesday night's shooting.
"Our community can breathe a sigh of relief," Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre said. "The threat is over."
Sauschuck said more details will be disclosed at a press conference Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
Card "was wearing the same clothes he had on when he entered the Just-in-Time Recreation and Schemengees Bar & Grille," according to ABC News.
Sauschuck said that a hunting restriction that had been in place for Lewiston, Lisbon, Monmouth, or Bowdoin has been lifted.
Maine Governor Janet Mills expressed her "profound gratitude" for law enforcement from Lewiston and around the area that assisted with the search for Card.
"Tonight Mainers can breathe a collective sigh of relief thanks to the brave first responders who worked night and day to find this killer," Maine Sen. Susan Collins
said in a statement. “When President Biden called me this evening to tell me the perpetrator of the heinous attacks in Lewiston had been found, we both expressed our profound appreciation for the courage and determination of these brave men and women."
"Grateful for the efforts of Maine State Police who led the manhunt to bring closure to this challenging search. Thanks to the men and women of our own New Hampshire State Police for their tireless assistance. It is time for the communities in Maine to heal and I hope the families of this tragic situation can heal in peace," New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said in a statement.
