There are lots of old stereotypes that have been difficult to shake for towns and cities across the state of Maine. One of those cities that has long had a questionable reputation when it comes to crime is Lewiston. If you believe the latest FBI data on robberies specifically, that reputation has stuck around for a reason.

According to YourLocalSecurity, Lewiston is the most robbed city in the state of Maine. Data shows that nearly 9 out of every 10,000 residents in Lewiston has been subject to a robbery. The FBI defines robbery as "taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or putting the victim in fear."

If you're looking for a silver lining, Maine is far safer than most other states in the country. Taking a short trip south to Chelsea, Massachusetts yields nearly triple the amount of robberies per 10,000 residents. Even that pales in comparison to the most robbed city in America, Baltimore, which has more than ten times more robberies per 10,000 residents than Lewiston.

So it's bad, but it's not all bad.
