I may be biased as a local but I believe Maine is one of the most beautiful states in the country. We have such a smorgasbord of natural landscapes, from mountain ranges to farmland, rocky shores, and sandy beaches.

As someone who yearns to spend every moment outside, the Pine Tree State boasts ample places for me to walk, hike, swim, rest, and immerse myself in nature. I am filled with constant gratitude because some of my favorite places are close to home.

Mackworth Island in Falmouth, Maine

One of those places happens to be a short 6 miles and one town away from my home. When driving down the U.S. Route 1 in Falmouth, you’re surrounded by businesses from banks to supermarkets, Verizon stores, Olympia Sports, Walmart, a movie theater, things and places that aren’t necessarily aesthetically pleasing nor a road you want to spend time on.

Some may not realize the natural beauty that rests right on that very road. Tucked away down a short road over a small bridge rests Mackworth Island, a beautiful, scenic place to swim, kayak, run, walk, and rest completely immersed in nature.

The loop around the island is 1.5 miles, providing the perfect distance to track your running or a leisurely walk through the woods and by the ocean, a relaxing way to find inner peace and ground yourself outside. I grew up in Maine and have spent a lot of time sitting on the beaches, walking the paths, searching for sea glass, and building fairy houses in the woods.

It used to be my grandmother’s favorite place to walk. This photo is her spending time on the island even in the dead of winter in ‘97 the year I was born.

It’s a small island with so much to offer. Whether you want to go for a stroll, a run, or you want to relax on the beach or on a bench with a journal, good book, or great friend, Mackworth is a slice of heaven tucked away right on the outskirts of a busy street.
