Who Is Behind the Mysterious Disappearance of the Mackworth Island Fairy Village in Maine?
Has anybody else who regularly hikes around Mackworth Island near Freeport, Maine, noticed a huge difference in the last year or so?!
This time around on my hike I couldn't find the fairy village or even the cute little signs in the woods that give directions to it.
I made a it a mission to find them and I had no luck. So bizarre.
Typically, there are at least a few built and tucked back in there, and the lot seemed to have been empty this year. I researched online about this, but the most I could find was a bunch of locals saying the exact same thing without an explanation.
For those of you who may not know the magic that is the fairy houses of Mackworth Island, let me explain what they are.
The idea behind the man-made fairy village is to reconnect with the earth and basically rekindle the feeling of being a kid again. Visitors collect all the natural supplies they can find on their hike, but they must be from the earth. They then build their own version of what a magical fairy house would look like so when we're not watching the fairies can live in them.
For example, some people make mini log cabins out of tiny branches and rocks, while others use berries for decoration! You can read more about that part here.
I'm unsure the reason behind the lack of fairy house building this year, and maybe somebody reading this right now will be able to answer this better, but it's such a sad thought that a human could have torn it down.
This is such a big part of the island, and I hope that if you're reading this you'll want to go over sometime soon and help re-build the fairy village legacy!
