Maine Radio Host Apologizes for Confusion Over Fluffernutter Joke

In my defense, it was a creative idea. Also in my defense, regardless of the articles that we put out being informative about upcoming weather in Maine you should be in the know about, brand new restaurants and other businesses opening, and everything Maine in between -- we're in radio.

And while our job in radio is to keep you informed of what's happening locally in Maine, whether you're in Portland, Brunswick, Bangor, York, or anywhere in between, it's also our job to entertain you. Preferably in creative ways. And that's honestly what I was trying to do.

But who knew a joke about a fluffernutter would actually result in me having to write an actual apology instead of the sarcastic angle I was taking on this whole saga. Let me explain.

Over the weekend, I posted a picture of a take on a fluffernutter that I made using sunflower butter instead of peanut butter due to a severe peanut allergy. It was the first time I'd experience anything resembling a fluffernutter in my life. Since fluffernutters are a rite of passage in New England, I shared it on social media.

Here's where things took a turn. Because, and I'm just going to be blunt about what I say next -- and rest assured, it's not whining, not complaining, not being a snowflake, it's just fact.

Mainers can rip us apart in the comments section of things we post, no matter what it is. Whether it's smack talk, whether it's praising a new restaurant, whether it's struggles of trying to buy a new home in an impossible market -- y'all destroy us in comments and can honestly talk to us very negatively.

And honestly, it's fine. It comes with the business and it's what we signed up for. Plus, it's not like we don't drop sarcastic comments about actual celebrities on the radio every day, so it's all good. We get it.

So, when I was roasted about my fluffernutter picture not being an actual fluffernutter because of the "hipster bagel" (it was a bulkie roll, by the way) instead of Wonder Bread, or not properly spreading the sunflower butter, or not using enough fluff -- I decided to have some fun and run with it, and responded with the following comment:

I followed up not only talking about it on the radio, but writing an article citing the entire scenario, about how a Maine radio station was threatening disciplinary action over a fluffernutter photo. And, honestly, in my mind, the whole concept of someone getting in trouble over a fluffernutter should've been a dead giveaway this was all a joke.

Well, fast forward to the apparent aftermath, where it was brought to my attention that the entire ordeal could be seen as misleading and like a serious matter instead of a sarcastic prank. (Maybe before my time in Maine, people actually got fired over fluffernutters, who knows.)

The irony of all this, is this article you're reading right now was actually planned to be "the disciplined host" releasing an "official statement" about the whole situation. Yet, here we are with life imitating art, and I'm writing a legitimate apology for any confusion I caused.

So, if you felt mislead, confused, concerned -- anything, I really am truly sorry. The whole angle was meant to entertain you, not bring any negativity to you.
