Patrick Hurd, the Co-Captain for the Portland Reavers: Maine Armored Combat, describes it this way,

Think MMA in suits of armor and blunted steel weapons. We are not actors, this is not choreographed, scripted. It’s our sport! On May 19th we will be at Wessie’s Den in Westbrook from 6-9. We will be doing a meet n greet so people can find out more about our sport, possibly get involved, or just find out more about our events!

This sport is literally the fighting of modern-day knights. While full-contact steel combat may be considered a niche hobby, Portland Reavers have lots of fans including women. They told WABI

You’ve got your former college athletes, we have a lot of veterans, we’ve got people who are into mixed martial arts, as well as people who are just medieval enthusiasts and want to swing swords.
